Everyone is talking about NFTs, a digital trend that seems destined to change the way we think about art and investments. Here’s how one of our most recent projects allowed us to explore the exciting intersection between large format printing and NFTs.
What Are NFTs?
The term NFT stands for Non-Fungible Token, but it may be easier to think of them as digital assets.
An NFT can be anything you find online: a tweet, a photo, a meme, a video, or even a song.
What makes NFTs special compared to a regular picture or video is that they are authenticated using the blockchain, the same technology underlying cryptocurrencies.
This means that while NFTs can be replicated endlessly, there’s always one verifiable “original,” the same way there are millions of Mona Lisa posters, but only one original painting.
While the concept of NFT may seem too abstract to the average person, investors and art collectors think otherwise. NFTs are being sold at some of the world’s most renowned auction houses, such as Sotheby’s or Christie’s, fetching prices as high as $69 million.
Large Format Printing and NFTs
One of our most recent large format printing projects allowed us to dip our toes in the waters of NFTs and we have to tell you: it’s a world full of possibilities.
While you may think that NFTs belong exclusively to the realm of digital communication, the truth is that with the right approach NFTs can be exhibited and enjoyed just like any other work of art.
The main goal of the project was to create graphics for an NFT exhibition curated by The Crypt Gallery. The works were displayed in the lobby of the Dream Hollywood Hotel, making it the first exhibition of its kind in a hospitality space.
The exhibition aims to showcase every aspect of NFT art: artists themselves, but also marketplaces and collectors.
Providing the visual framework to display works that were created with a digital-first mindset was an exciting challenge that we believe will help set the standard for future exhibitions featuring NFTs.
Combining the Best of the Digital and Analog Worlds
The large format printing project included the following elements:
- Matte white perm Self-Adhesive Vinyl (SAV) and clear removable SAV wall graphics for the lobby wall.
- Wall graphics for the two auction walls collectors showcase.
- Display casing to advertise the collectors’ showcase wall. The display consisted of gatorboard wrapped in matte white perm SAV).
- Decals in removable clear SAV.
- Display casing for auction wall TVs (.030 styrene wrapped in matte white SAV flushed into the wall).
These solutions provide the flexibility needed to exhibit different types of media while offering a visually coherent experience that combines the best of the digital and analog worlds.
With this project, we have stepped into a new frontier of large format printing, one where the boundaries between online and physical experiences blend into a whole that is greater and richer than the sum of its parts.
